Unique History for Scotty Pippen Jr. and His Hall of Fame Father; Big Wins for Trail Blazers, Spurs, Nuggets

Some special history was made on Saturday night at the United Center in Chicago.


Scotty Pippen Jr., the son of Bulls’ legend and Basketball Hall of Famer Scottie, put up 30 points and 10 assists on 13-for-16 shooting in the Memphis Grizzlies’ 142-131 win over the Bulls. In the process, Scotty became the first player to register at least 25 points and 8 assists on 80 percent shooting at the United Center since?


Scottie.


The elder Pippen achieved the feat on Nov. 15, 1995, when he had 27 points and 8 assists on 8-for-9 shooting in 30 minutes in a 113-94 win over the Cleveland Cavaliers.


Pippen Jr., who turned 24 years old on November 10, was born in Portland, Ore., and attended high school in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. and at Sierra Canyon in California. He was named to the SEC’s All-Freshman Team in 2020 and was All-SEC First Team twice while at Vanderbilt University. The 6 foot, 1 inch, 170 pound guard went undrafted in 2022 and spent his rookie year between the Los Angeles Lakers and South Bay Lakers. He played 12 games for South Bay last season as well as 21 games (16 starts) for the Grizzlies last season. In 28 career games with South Bay (starting 13) he averaged 22.2 points, 5.3 assists, 3.9 rebounds, and 1.8 steals on 47 percent shooting. This season with the Grizzlies, he is averaging 12.6 points, 5.9 assists, 3.9 rebounds, and 1.1 steals.


Scotty, who has eclipsed 10 assists five times this season, was the high point man on Saturday for a Grizzlies’ team that also received a 26-point contribution from Jaylen Wells (10-for-14 from the field, 6-for-10 from downtown). Jaren Jackson Jr. scored 23 points on 7-for-15 shooting. For the Bulls, Zach LaVine put up 29 points while Nikola Vucevic on 9-for-14 had a strong 26 points and 8 rebounds. Vucevic continues his great campaign, averaging 20.5 points and 9.7 rebounds on 58 percent shooting. Eighteen games in, he is averaging his highest point total since 2020-2021 (23.4 points per game). The Grizzlies improved to 10-7 with the win while the Bulls dropped to 7-11.


LaMelo Scores 50 in Loss


Charlotte Hornets guard LaMelo Ball poured in 50 points Saturday in a 125-119 loss to the surging Milwaukee Bucks. Ball, 17-for-38 and 6-for-17 from downtown, also had 10 assists. He and teammate Brandon Miller combined for 82 points, as Miller himself had a game shooting 11-for-23 (6-for-13 from deep) with 11 rebounds to along with his 32 points. The Hornets are now 6-10.


The Bucks, meanwhile, have won four consecutive games and stand at 8-9. Giannis Antetokounmpo and Damian Lillard combined for 63 points (32 points, 11 rebounds, 6 assists for Antetokounmpo; 31 points, 4 rebounds, 4 assists for Lillard).
