The Sacramento Kings unloaded all-star point guard De’Aaron Fox on Sunday evening, sending the disenchanted lead guard to the San Antonio Spurs. Jordan McLaughlin is also going from Sacramento to San Antonio, while Chicago Bulls guard Zach LaVine is heading to Sacramento along Sidy Cissoko, three first round picks (2025 from Charlotte, 2027 from San Antonio, 2031 from Minnesota), and three second round picks (Chicago’s pick in 2025, Denver’s in 2028 and their own pick back in 2028). The Bulls are receiving guard Tre Jones, sharp shooting Kevin Huerter, and forward Zach Collins.
The story of this deal is Fox going to the Spurs, joining all-star Victor Wembanyama, who at 20 years old has his entire career ahead of him and superstardom written all over him if health permits. The deal likely pushes veteran Chris Paul to the bench. Fox’s defensive ability and ability to score and playmake (25.0 points, 6.1 assists, 5.0 rebounds on 47 percent shooting) gives the Spurs a bonafide scoring option at the point guard spot. He is crafty with an ability to effectively get into the midrange and into the paint.
LaVine in Sacramento reunites him with DeRozan (21.5 points, 3.7 rebounds, 3.6 assists, 48 percent shooting), as the duo was previously together in Chicago for four seasons while LaVine himself had been with the organization since 2017. In obtaining the 29-year-old LaVine (24.0 points, 4.8 rebounds, 4.5 assists, 51 percent shooting), the Kings are now armed with two legitimate wing scorers while Domantas Sabonis continues to man the paint. Keegan Murray and Malik Monk fill out the starting five with elite shooting (Murray) and a playmaking Monk who is one of the league’s best sixth men.
Fox gets a fresh start in San Antonio while LaVine reunites with DeRozan. A good deal for both the Spurs and Kings, while the Bulls are keen on building around the backcourt of Josh Giddey (22) and Coby White (24) with young guard Ayo Dosunmu (25) and forward Patrick Williams (23).
