Detroit Pistons Fire Monty Williams After One Season

The Detroit Pistons have fired head coach Monty Williams, per ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski.

It is Pistons’ President of Basketball Operations Trajan Langdon’s first big move in that role with his new club.

Williams, 52, was the NBA’s Coach of the Year for the 2021-2022 season, leading the Phoenix Suns to a 64-18 mark. In his first season in Detroit this past year, the Pistons went 14-68.

The Pistons brought Williams in prior to last season on a six year, $78 million contract.

Williams did not have much to work with in Detroit, the Pistons having one of the youngest rosters in the NBA. Still, Cade Cunningham has star potential and big man Jalen Duren has potential as does wing Ausar Thompson. Cunningham is 22, Thompson is 21, and Duren is 20.

With their youth, the Pistons have a roster that is still learning to play together and it is one where the players themselves are growing not just as NBA players but as men as well. It does make some sense though that Langdon would want to bring in his own hire, which will now be the case.
