2024 NBA Free Agency Opens: Big Deals on Day 1

The 2024 NBA free agency period opened on Sunday, the annual summer frenzy when teams look to improve on the previous year in hopes of competing for, or retaining, a championship.

Here is a rundown of the moves so far:

Los Angeles Clippers, James Harden agree to two year, $70 million deal for Harden to return, per Ohm Youngmisuk. It is very unlikely that Paul George returns to Los Angeles. George will be meeting with the Clippers, Orlando Magic, and Philadelphia 76ers, per ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski. The Clippers are also working to find trade suitors for Russell Westbrook and P.J. Tucker, per Shams Charania.

Obi Toppin will re-sign with the Indiana Packers for four years and $60 million, per ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski. Toppin is a restricted free agent.

Max Christie will sign a four-year, $32 million contract to stay with the Los Angeles Lakers, per ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski.

Kevin Love re-signs with the Miami Heat at two years, $8 million, according to ESPN’s Tim Bontemps. The Philadelphia 76ers are signing Andre Drummond to a two-year, $10 million contract, also according to Bontemps.

Patrick Williams re-signs with the Chicago Bulls for five years and $90 million, according to ESPN’s Jamal Collier.

Luke Kornet returns to the Boston Celtics on a one-year deal, according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski.

Kentavious Caldwell-Pope signs with the Orlando Magic for three years and $66 million, according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski.

Jonas Valanciunas signs a three-year, $30 million deal with the Washington Wizards, according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski. Also according to Wojnarowski, the Dallas Mavericks sign Naji Marshall to a three-year, $27 million deal, and the Phoenix Suns sign Mason Plumlee to a one-year deal.

Chris Paul signs with the San Antonio Spurs for one year and $11 million, according to Wojnarowski.

Derrick Jones Jr. signs a three-year, $30 million deal with the Clippers, according to ESPN’s Ohm Youngmisuk.

————————————————————-—-

The Clippers and Warriors are in tough and odd situations. With George out of Los Angeles presumably, and Westbrook likely gone, they will be a new-look team next season. The Kawhi Leonard and George pairing that was so highly thought of when they joined forces in 2019 ended up being a disappointment, and George is set to join another contender hoping to be a final piece to a puzzle. Jones Jr. helps the Clippers fill some of the void that will be left by George’s absence. Just 27 years old, Jones Jr. is a live body who can defend and shoot three-pointers. He is a good addition to help replace George. Similarly in Dallas, Marshall is a nice pickup to replace Jones Jr.

The Warriors, who are moving on from Klay Thompson, will look different as well. They could still trade Andrew Wiggins, but it is looking less likely that they will be a legitimate contender for Stephen Curry’s final seasons.

Paul going to the Spurs is one of the best things that could happen to Victor Wembanyama. The Spurs did not have a true point guard last season, and they address the need by getting one of game’s all-time greatest floor generals. Paul will mentor and help the young Spurs just like he did while in Oklahoma City with Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, while also on the court getting Wembanyama high quality looks.

Thompson will be meeting with the Lakers, Clippers, Mavericks, and 76ers, according to Wojnarowski. Thompson will help any of those teams, particularly in Dallas or with the Lakers getting quality looks playing with Luka Doncic or LeBron James. He would also help elevate the 76ers, providing them with more perimeter shooting as he could take the place of Buddy Hield, who is an unrestricted free agent.
